Global investment in clean energy will reach $1.7 trillion in 2023, accounting for 70% of global spending on electricity generation, driven by falling costs for technologies such as solar photovoltaic and wind power. Colombia reflects this trend, with significant investment in solar and wind energy.
By 2025, the country plans to activate 22 new renewable energy projects , which will add 697 megawatts to installed capacity and represent 15% of Colombia's electricity generation . This will strengthen the national energy matrix and attract private investment exceeding $500 million , according to SER Colombia.
In the first half of 2025, 17 energy projects were launched to strengthen the National Interconnected System (SIC) . Most of these projects rely on renewable energy sources such as solar energy, but there are also thermal energy projects.

Solar energy projects in Colombia
According to XM Colombia, during the first quarter of 2025, the country added 13 solar projects to the National Interconnected System (SIN), totaling 16.05 MW of new capacity. Adding those already in operation and testing, the country is close to surpassing 2 GW of installed photovoltaic capacity.

La Guajira and Magdalena are the two departments with the most energy generation programs, according to the Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME).
The flexibility of the energy system, thanks to distributed generation (electricity production close to consumption), improves resilience to crises and is crucial for the nation's energy future.
Furthermore, Colombian consumers are actively adopting self-consumption models and integrating into energy communities, while green energy contracts are gaining ground. Despite these advances, challenges such as energy market volatility, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, persist.
It is essential to strengthen planning, reduce regulatory uncertainty, diversify energy sources, and invest in transmission and distribution infrastructure, with international cooperation between the public and private sectors.
In this context of transformation, Barranquilla will become the center of discussion on the energy future of Latin America. From May 21 to 23, 2025, the city will host the
The 8th Latam Renewables Meeting and Fair , a highly relevant event for energy sector players in the region. This event will bring together more than 100 companies, along with international experts, business leaders, government officials, and academics, who will address trends and opportunities in renewable energy. More than 4,000 attendees are expected to explore market evolution, industrial transformation, and the impact of emerging technologies, with an expanded trade show.
